Nature in Mexico

Anywhere I  have traveled in the world, I check out the natural world in that area.   So I will attempt to show what we’ve seen in Mexico.   From our patio, to the parks and to the mountains, we’ll share what we find in the natural world of Mexico.

This is last year’s nest in a small tree on our patio.  Cut a golf ball in half and that is how big the nest is.  Don Juan de Hummingbird (DJH) is the current male hummingbird that claims this patio as his territory.  DJH chases off all visiting hummingbird except his potential mate.  He will feed on the sugar water in the feeder many times all day and sometimes fly to the tree where the old nest is, waiting for the day the female wishes to mate and begin a new nest.  Sadly, like many birds, he will not share in raising his young. Once mating is over, he will try to find other females to mate with until the breeding season is over.

I would post photos or video of DJH but he’s always moving and difficult to catch.  I’ll keep trying.  More later.

  1. I got a chuckle out of this: “Sadly, like many birds, he will not share in raising his young. Once mating is over, he will try to find other females to mate with until the breeding season is over.” I wonder how many species of males this applies to!? 🙂
